Moving 175 miles (282 km) eastward (down the image), Thakkola Valley cuts across the range. Another 100 miles (161 km) east along the Himalayas from Thakkola is another lake, Paiku Co (shaped like a bow tie).

The Himalayas rise well above that level and form a barrier to the monsoons that come across the Indian plains from the left side of the picture. This causes nearly all of the precipitation to fall on the southern side of the range.
