Ruapehu and Tongariro volcanoes, North Island, New Zealand. In contrast with Mt. Egmont, Ruapehu is active and frequently produces plumes of ash and steam. In 1995 the volcano erupted and blasted the acidic waters of the summit crater lake outward over the countryside.

Rotorua geothermal field, North Island, New Zealand. Individual well pads, roads and pipeline corridors are clearly visible in this exeptional view of the Rotorua (Wairaki?) geothermal field. Volcanic heat and steam are harnessed for both heating and electrical power generation for North Island.
