Western Sahara: At the northern end of the coast of this
country, due south of the Canary Islands, is the western margin of
the Sahara Desert. The climate is relatively cool here due to the
cool waters offshore. Almost no vegetation grows. A small salt
playa appears in the extreme top right corner under scattered clouds.
The only features on this coast marked on the 1983 ONC map other than
a small coastwise road, are shrines and shipwrecks.

France/Spain: The high spine of the Pyrenees Mts are snow
covered and stretch across the lower part of the picture from left to
right)(highest point of the Pyrenees is 3404 m, outside this
picture). Snowfree foothills of the Pyrennes in Aquitaine (France)
appear at the bottom (north is to the bottom of the view). The
Pyrenees range began forming about 320 million years ago and was
strongly uplifted again during early stages of Eurasian-African plate
collision. Complex folded strata on the Spanish side (near Pamplona)
appear as bends and waves in foothill rock across the top of the
view. Tin, tungsten, talc, fluorite, barium and gold have been mined
from the mountains, and petroleum is produced from the adjacent
Aquitaine sedimentary basin.

Richat Structure: The "bulls eye" of the Richat Structure,
stands out in the midst of the barren Gres de Chinguetti Plateau in
central Mauritania, northwest Africa. The structure represents
uplifted, layered (sedimentary) rocks that have been eroded by water
and wind into the present shape. Desert sands have invaded the
feature from the south.
