| New Zealand: Cook Strait. Plumes of sediment-laden water extend in to the Strait and southern ocean. The Alpine fault zone (boundary between the Indian/Australian and the Pacific tectonic plates) is marked by the Southern Alps of South Island. The boundary between the vegetated highlands and the ruddier plains is the active Marlborough fault zone; the Hope fault, also active, is the next major topographic alignment to the south. |
