New Zealand: Cook Strait. Plumes of sediment-laden water extend in to the Strait and southern ocean. The Alpine fault zone (boundary between the Indian/Australian and the Pacific tectonic plates) is marked by the Southern Alps of South Island. The boundary between the vegetated highlands and the ruddier plains is the active Marlborough fault zone; the Hope fault, also active, is the next major topographic alignment to the south.

New Zealand: Cook Strait. In this companion view to frame STS104-329-026, the active Wellington fault zone, part of the plate boundary complex, can be seen to pass southward through the city of Wellington, continuing offshore past Port Nicholson bay. This is an exceptional shot of the topographically high node from which the Hope and Marlborough faults (see above) splay off from the Alpine fault zone.
