| France: The Alps. This view embraces the great arc of the Maritime Alps of N. Italy/SE. France, to the Jura of Switzerland and France, to the Dolomite Alps of NE. Italy. The African and Eurasian continents have collided (and closed Mediterranean-type seas) several times in the geologic past. The Maritimes began to be uplifted and folded about 80 m.y. ago; the Jura and Prealpine ranges are younger (~65 to 23 m.y. ago). |
