| Italy: Napoli, Vesuvius, island of Ischia, Appenino Napoletano. A second frame in a fine stereophoto mapping strip of the Appenine chain, from northern Italy to the Gulf of Tarranto, this photo beautifully shows the volcanic cone and crater of Vesuvius. The structural alignment of volcanoes, a result of the Africa-Eurasia collision and progressive closing of the Mediterranean, is readily observable here. |
