United States: Big Island, Hawaii. Dark lava flows decorate the flanks of the great shield-shaped volcano Mauna Loa; Mauna Kea lies farther north, across a topographic swale that is visible here. The area where lava was flowing into the sea during this mission is under the band of clouds along the northeast side of the island.

United States: Hawaiian Islands. Molokai, Lanai, Maui, Kahoolawe, and Hawaii (from foreground to background) fill the field of view. Inactive volcano Haleakala makes up most of the larger lobe of Maui. As this piece of the Pacific oceanic plate has moved NNW-ward across a mantle hotspot, volcanoes have grown above the sea surface to form the islands. Hawaii is at the volcanically active SE end of the chain; a submarine volcano -- not yet an island -- lies just south of Hawaii.
