| Russia: Kara Bogaz Gol Bay, sand spits separating the bay from the Caspian. During the previous Caspian recession, the natural pass was dammed (1980) to restrict water to the deeper Caspian basin. Brine and salt works began in the bay and a controllable inlet was built in 1984 to feed brine evaporation operations. During the present sea-level rise, the channel was restored through the spit in 1993 to relieve flooding pressure on the Caspian shores. |
