Port Said, Egypt: This image shows evidence of land use change associated with Egypt’s "Mega" Development Projects. At the mouth of the Suez canal, a large auxiliary channel has been formed as part of a new central hub port and industrial zone, known as the East Port-Said Project.

Turks and Caicos Islands: Southwest of the Bahamas and north of Hispaniola lie the Turks and Caicos Islands. In this view the extensive shallow water areas of Caicos Bank (turquoise blue) dominate to the south of the Caicos Islands.

von Karman vortices, Sea of Japan: Distinct von Karmen vortices are forming in the stratocumulus field downwind from the volcanic island of Rishiri-to in the northern Sea of Japan off the northwest coast of Hokkaido, Japan. These features form when a stable atmosphere with low clouds flows past a relatively small obstacle with a height greater than the depth of the cloud layer.

Sicily, Italy: The southerly-looking view shows the triangular-shaped island of Sicily. With only very limited coastal plains the island's topography consists of rugged hills and low mountains. Snow capped Mt. Etna, one of the world's most instrumented volcanoes, is visible near the northeast point of the island. Two other distinctive features in this image are the lighter-colored zone of suspended sediment in the water along the southern coast and, in the distance, the smaller islands of Malta.

New York City Metropolitan Area, New York: This near-vertical view shows one of the most dynamic cities in the world, New York. With a population in the metropolitan New York of 11,685,650, and in the city of 8,008,278 (March 2001), the New York City area is one of the leading commercial, financial, cultural, and communication centers in the world. The sediment-laden Hudson River enters the scene near the bottom left (north) of the image and can be seen flowing south emptying into Upper and Lower New York Bays (right of center of the image). Long Island is visible extending to the east at the upper left of the image. Right (west) of the Hudson River, the state of New Jersey and the Newark metropolitan area are visible. Sandy Hook in New Jersey can be seen in the upper right quadrant of the image.

Lake Powell/Colorado River: The deeply entrenched, meandering Colorado River is distinctively dark as the river winds its way across the arid terrain of southeast Utah. While Glen Canyon Dam (bottom of image) is located in northern Arizona, the reservoir of Lake Powell is in Utah. The Escalante and San Juan Rivers, two major tributaries that flow into Lake Powell (from the northwest and east respectively) are also discernable. The darker-looking, elongated and elevated feature north of Lake Powell is the Kaiparowits Plateau. Navajo Mountain is the darker circular feature to the south (to the right) of the lake.

Vail, Colorado: The snow-covered ski runs of Vail, Colorado, look like white ribbons in contrast to the dark green forests of the Rocky Mountains. This detailed image is part of a larger view of area ski resorts photographed by the STS-100 Space Shuttle crew in April 2001.

In the complete image, much of I-70 and U.S. Highway 24 can be distinguished. The numerous ski runs of Vail are in the upper left of the photo and Copper Mountain Resort is in the upper right.
