| South America: Pacific moisture, borne by the westerlies, banks against the western slopes of the southern Andes. Foehn air has formed east of the mountains as the westerly flow continues downslope toward the Atlantic. Almost cloud-free at the base of the mountains, the warm, dry air has enough turbulence to induce wave patterns in the clouds as it interacts and mixes with higher moisture conditions further east. |
