Central Asia: View north showing most of the Caspian Sea. Over the past two decades Caspian Sea level has risen about 2 meters, with the low-relief northern shores experiencing the greatest flooding. Variations in rainfall have not been sufficient to account for the rise, and there has speculation about tectonic subsidence.

STS098-701-63
Central Asia: The delta of the Ural River has been progressively inundated and only skeletal traces of levied canals remain in places. What were once subaerial salt flats (Sor Kaydak, Sor Mertvyy Kultuk) are now submerged.

Europe: African-Eurasian collisional plate boundary (excellent series: STS098-711A-33 through 97) from W. Greece to the Dardanelles. The arc of mountains extending from the Peloponnesos of Greece, northward through Albania into Macedonia is a product of the plate collision. Aegean Sea, Cyclades and Dodecanese Islands.

Europe: African-Eurasian collisional plate boundary series. Thessalonika, Albania, Lakes Ohrid and Prespa on Albanian/Macedonian border, and the dark, snow-capped peaks of the Vardar zone--oceanic crust piled up onto the overriding Eurasian plate. Gulf of Corinth--a basin bounded by active faults. Smog from Istanbul.

Europe: Western Alps (part of a rare, clear series: STS098-712-49 through 63). The Maritime Alps of western Italy/eastern France form the curving horn of the mountain belt, embracing the unusually smog-free Po valley plain. Faults of the younger Rhone rift truncate and down-drop Alpine folded structures. Lakes Como and Maggiore.

Europe: Central Alps from the Inn River valley and Lago di Garda (E) to Lake Geneva and the Rhine rift (W); between the southern Rhine valley and Lake Geneva is the Basel-Dijon transform fault zone. Lake Neuchatel lies NE of Lake Geneva in the northern Jura; Lakes Como and Maggiore are in shadow along the southern mountain front.
