Longitudinal dunes (center) in northwestern Saudi Arabia indicate the dominant northwesterly wind direction; star dunes at lower right reflect interaction of the northwesterly winds and winds deflected by the bedrock uplands. Agricultural fields irrigated by center-pivot systems lie northwest of the dune fields.
