| Comet Hale-Bopp: Comet Hale-Bopp as seen by the STS-84 crew from orbit. Although the Earth was in no danger of being impacted by Hale-Bopp (this time!) it serves as a reminder that all planets in our solar system are vulnerable. The mass extinction at the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary (65 million years ago) might have been caused by an impact from a comet or asteriod with a possible diameter of 10 km. |
